Steptember NZ 2015

I'm not sure if any of you have heard of it - but Steptember is currently the new monthly fundraising campaign that is going on - similar to Junk Free June, Dry July or Fab Feb. I'm sure there is one for every month, but I'm not sure of them all.
Anyway, I think this is the first year of Steptember in New Zealand, it's a world wide campaign raising money for people, mainly kids, with Cerebral Palsy. The aim? For the people involved to walk 10 thousand steps each day for 28 days and getting people to sponsor you.

So, Mum and I have decided to take part, and Andrew H has joined us in our team - I think this is going to get quite competitive! We were meant to start yesterday, but the pedometers didn't arrive in the mail until this morning. So today, our first day won't get a very good start, but I reckon it'll be easy enough to reach those 10 thousand steps....I've already clocked about 300 since I walked in the door and organised breakfast - it's quite interesting really. The unfortunate thing is that the pedometers only reach 9,999 steps - so if we were to exceed that, I'm not sure whether it will re-zero itself, or what...

With me doing a heap of milkings and the calves this month, I'm sure it's going to be super easy to achieve. Mum has suggested she might attach her pedometer to the cat....hehehe, I could see that happening too! Just as well I've got plenty of work to keep me busy and stepping :P We've been sponsored $15 so far (thanks Miriam and Nana!), and I think a good aim would be $100.

Frodo has delighted Mum and Dad these last couple of days - bringing them gifts early in the morning. This morning it was a dead bird, attached to a small branch, in their room at 5:15am. She woke them with her "battle cry" as Mum calls it, as she always does it when she has been hunting. At least it wasn't on their bed?! hehe, then Pippa promptly brought it back inside a little while later, feeling very proud of herself!
Yesterday morning there was a disemboweled baby mouse at the bottom of the stairs, again, Pippa got super excited to see it, thanks Frodo.
And a couple nights ago she brought in a LIVE mouse, through the catflap. Thankfully I'd gone to bed, but I suddenly heard a some yelling, laughing, mighta been a few bad words mentioned....Apparently Frodo was really pleased with herself, had it in the kitchen, sung her battle cry alerting Mum and Dad to it, then let the mouse go. Ooops, says she. It nearly got inside the base of the fridge, but Dad caught it by the tail, and threw it out the door. Phew.

Finally I finished my last assignment for my second course, a couple days late but not entirely my fault - I was waiting to speak to a tutor and they took a few days to get back to me...This level 5, 8 credit assignment wasn't too bad, but there was one section where I don't think they'll appreciate too much as after doing my own research I couldn't find the answer. And I was then waiting on PGG Wrightson to give me some prices...It was funny, I emailed through to enquiries, told them I was doing an assignment and needed some theoretical prices for a tonne of Barley, and the delivery fees. She got them to me yesterday, but obviously didn't read my first email correctly. Said that payment would need to be made in full, since I didn't have an account, before the load would be dispatched to my current address. Hehehe I'm like, oh shoot, PLEASE don't send us any Barley! Mum and Dad thought it was a huge joke.
But it's nice to be finished my second of four courses, finally. Until they send them back anyway, hopefully passed. Now I've got a few days to wait for the next lot to arrive - perhaps should take a chance to actually read a book? Which one though, is the question...still haven't read any of the Charles Dickens that we bought months ago.

  1. The pedometers go up to 99,999 don't they? Mine's on 13004 already...I'll explain that on my blog tomorrow hopefully, I doubt I'll have time tonight. I hate to say, the pedometers are a little too sensitive... $100, sounds like a good goal. I'll try and find someway to donate, just a pity I don't have online banking, it would make things so simple... :P

    1. Hmmm, *looks at small instruction paper* yep, they do...oops, my bad. Not sure what I'm up to total, but I keep having to reset it for when I drive to and from work - so they're all listed on my phone. Won't be the 10K, but will be close-ish. They are sensitive, won't ever be completely accurate...

Huh? You don't need to donate, you're taking part in the challenge! Wow, Xj didn't have an eftpos card until recently, you don't have online banking...wow, I didn't realise how sweet I had it lol

    2. haha, yeah, well... More a case of I can't, anyway. yeah, i don't have online banking or eftpos. I used to get pocket money till I was 18, so always paid cash. Now that I have a bank account, (since 2011), I haven't actually touched it much, I think I've only taken about $1000 out total. But the type of account is one that gives higher interest (but none when money is taken out), and has no online banking system, so basically, I can only withdraw money through an ATM... :P

Yeah, I'm gonna have to reset mine too, it's just not accurate enough. Wow, a phone? Hehe, notebook for me... I don't even have a phone... :P

    3. It's funny the different ways people are brought up - I never got pocket money, even as a kid. Then when it was decided I was doing enough actual work on the farm, I started getting paid - that was at 15. Ah right.

I'm gonna get 10 thousand today!! :P And that will be accurate too....lol. Yep, a phone. Ever heard of it? ;) I don't know what I'd do without it - calling ability, alarm clock, checking the time, writing notes, checking for important emails, checking my bank etc etc when I'm out and about, you have much to learn, young one ;) hahaha

    4. Lol what kind of account is that? I've heard of ones that you can access only online...but not only offline :P haha.
Yeah I got pocket money until I was 18 as well but mum and dad didn't keep enough cash to pay all of us so they eventually started paying it into my account (the little ones just have the amount accumulated in a book).

Haha phones...I wasn't allowed one until I was 18 but I can't imagine life without it now! :P

    5. Really? I got pocket money from about 10-18, and I forget when it was that I got a minor wage which basically covered weekend work. Once I was 18, no more pocket money, then now that I'm working full time, I have a full wage... Not sure what exactly it is though, it just goes into the bank and stays there... :P

Haha, I hope to get there, I think I should. My 2000 for the Argo was accurate I think, I went for about the same length trips and checked it, it seemed to be about right. Today, I have it accurate... :P
A phone, yup, it's one of these newfangled gizmos, a big wooden box on the wall, and you turn and handle and talk into it... Isn't that right? ;P
Haha, funny, everyone today raves about "wireless", and how good it is. They did the exact same thing a few hundred years ago, talking about radios... :P
Hehe, I have the calling ability when I'm home, but I have a watch for the time and alarms, Notebook for writing notes, computer for checking for important emails once a day, and the bank tells me what's there every 6 months... We live identical lives Kayger! :P

    6. hmm, yeah Mum and Dad bought us phones when we were working on the farm - it was the only form of contact that we had there...nowadays they're so essential. If I go anywhere without it in my pocket, or bag or car. Or just in general, especially when I'm by myself I'm a little nervous. There are a lot of dead spots around here, but if I needed to call someone in an emergency and I didn't have it, or something, I would freak. As you can't just hunt someone down to ask for help these days...Otherwise I don't use it for normal phone reasons, I don't text anymore and don't call - just answer it if it were to ring - uncommon. It's just gotta be there for just in case....

Haha, we do live the same lives! :P The bank doesn't tell me anymore, I have to figure it out for myself. And it would be sad if I had to pay them to print something out that said I had no money ;) lol

    7. Radio? What's that lol? :P

Haha I have a computer for editing photos and blogging, laptop for relaxing with a movie, MP3 player (that I don't even use...) for music, and my phone for everything else :P and the bank sends me statements every three months for the sake of longer records but I use Internet banking for anything practical...lol

Kayger you don't txt anymore?? Why lol? I'm just grateful for other instant messaging so I don't have to change to a more expensive plan :P hahaha. And yeah, wouldn't really feel safe asking anyone for help these days... :/

    8. Yeah, I guess, from that aspect, a phone would be useful, but round here, the entire place is dead (except for standing on the third fencepost from the ridge with a coathanger raised above your head in your right and and with the phone in your left hand extended at an angle of 047 degrees from North and lifted to an angle of 12 degrees from horizontal... :P So if there's an emergency, it still ain't much use... :P

Haha, that would be kinda sad, yeah... :P

    9. Haha Bee I think you're the person I text the most often these days - and I haven't texted you in weeks :P

Lol but do you get the likes of CB's and such to work? Worksafe pulled up some local contractors and told them they needed better forms of communication in their tractors and at the general base area - like CB's but not hand held ones. But they wouldn't work around hilly areas anyway...

    10. Haha yeah okay fair enough...around here reception isn't a problem and you can get wifi in a lot of places too...lol

Okay wow Kayger...yeah we don't text much lol

    11. Lol, it was funny when my sister came home, we go to town for one day and see how much she's changed... As soon as we're in reception, texting away, never stops till we leave it... :P

CBs as in radios? We personally don't although up the road there's a kind of valley that works well, so all the locals pitched in to get some and a repeater hooked up, so that covers that area. Also means we can tap into it on LSAR callouts... :P Round here though, nothing like that works. We could resort to PLBs, but if you're healthy enough to activate it and wait for help, then you can probably get home...

    12. Haha funny how that happens. :)

Yep, radios I guess. Ah ok, interesting...

  2. Hehe gotta love gifts from the cats don't you...we had what looked like a goldfish from someone's pond one time. Not sure who around here would have a fish pond though lol...and there was a car that used to bring lots of the neighbours' socks and stuff over...lol

Mice and fridges? Yeah. That's another story...

    1. A cat that stole socks? Okay, I've never seen them go beyond meat... That is seriously weird!!! I guess cats like playing with socks though...
We had a cat that used to retrieve magpies we'd shot... :P

    2. Yeah we've had all sorts lol...mum used to have a cat that liked avocado and (albiet chicken-flavoured) potato chips!

      Ew that's just gross :P

    3. There was something on TV I saw once, general doc's and a cat was mentioned...this family kept having random items of clothing and other random things turning up in their yard. Their cat always wanted out at night, they tried locking it in, but it went mental. Things kept turning up - sounds a bit like a Slinky Milinky story huh?
Then they put some form of security cameras out - and it turned out the cat was dragging all these items up the street, stolen from neighbours houses....hehe

Pippa LOVES chicken chippies - any chippies actually, but she prefers chicken the best. You can't have any in the house without her finding out. Dad was munching on some a week or so ago, and he reckoned it was one for him, one for Pippa, she does eat healthy things too - tomatoes and such, but...lol

    4. Haha wow...

Yeah actually my bro used to have a cat that went crazy over apples...we always used to dump the groceries on the floor until we put them away but we had to start dealing with the apples sooner!! (Like before the meat...go figure!)

      Delete
    5. Haha, that cat must have had a real health fetish! Unlike Pippa ;) hehe

  3. A shame that 26 million is being wasted when so many causes need more funding. Currently guide dogs, leprosy, cancer Society are the main charities I help with, sometimes it feels like you're not doing alot, but every dollar does help. So yeah good work Kayger and Andrew.

    1. Hmm, I definitely have to agree with that, maybe we should all become politicians? I've always somewhat wanted to be a foster home for the guide dog puppies, but would never work for us unfortunately! :-)

    2. Aye, that is an issue, there are just so many "good causes" out there, you can't support them all. That's when you just take your pick, and go with the ones you can...
It seems ironic, doesn't it, that JK is so popular because he gives his own entire salary to charity, and yet, he's happy to waste *our* entire salaries on something few of us care about...
